In school, sometimes teachers teach you something you don’t really want to know but you have no choice but to listen and understand the lessons. When I was in college some of the lessons in computer programming like Perl or Pascal doesn’t make sense to me as I really don’t want to learn some of these languages and I prefer other useful languages such as PHP and ASP. But after finishing all these subjects, all programming languages have many similarities, one of which is the use of Regular Expressions.

What are Regular Expressions? Simply put, a Regular Expression is a set of symbols used to search for occurrences of text or to search and replace text. The simplest regular expressions are DOS/Windows wildcards; for example, *.doc refers to all file names with DOC extensions. However, regular expression functions are available in many programming languages that allow for complex pattern matching and text manipulation. There are many tools on the Internet that helps you understand about Regular Expressions and Regular Expression Tool and Library by NetShiftMedia is one of them.

Do these make any sense with you? As a Web Designer, I rarely encounter the use of Regular Expressions. But if I think I’ll decide to become a fulltime Web Developer someday I really have to understand and relearn Programming Fundamentals.
