Tonight I went to ACCEED Conference Center, Makati City to attend Google Developer Day 2007. Pinoy Googlers from the Google Headquarters including Aileen Apolo were the speakers of the event.

Google Developer Day 2007The 3-hour event full of talks and a powerpoint presentation was about inviting web developers to contribute to Google’s new services and talks about their plans for the Filipino IT Community. Here below is the summary.

  • iGoogle - iGoogle (formerly Google Personalized Homepage) is a customizable homepage with a capability to add web feeds and Google Gadgets. Reminds me of My Yahoo which is more popular to local users.
  • Google Gadgets -Google’s version of Yahoo Widgets. I havent tried this yet, but Widgets looked better than Gadgets
  • Google OpenSocial - A set of common application programming interfaces (APIs) for web-based social network applications, developed by Google, and released November 1, 2007. Looks very promising and very useful for Web Developers
  • Google Android - (Acquired by Google from Android Inc) Is an open source mobile phone platform based on the Linux operating system and developed by the Open Handset Alliance. This is more focused on developing applications for mobile phones.
  • Google Summer of Code - First held from May to August of 2005, in which Google awards stipends to students who successfully complete a free software / open-source coding project during the summer. I heard they pay $4500 each student to develop a useful application for Google, and a better chance of being hired.
  • Working @ Google - They talked about the great benefits at Google and how to get ahead with the competing applicants who dream to become a Googler. They invited all Filipinos to take their chances working for Google.

Overall the Conference was a basic introduction of the new services that Google is hoping to be fully supported by the Filipino Web Development Community and encouraging them to prepare and compete with the rest of the programmers around the world.

The funny part of the conference was most of the questions was answered something like this “Please read the documentation so you can give a more relevant question”. I was not very satisfied with the answers, and Joel from Domains.ph looked he was expecting more especially that they came all the way from Mountain View, California to talk about their new services.

I also met with one of my colleagues on one of the companies I’ve worked for, Cell Jacela. Most of the people I see are really nerd and techie. The food was fine but no softdrinks. Buti nalang may free t-shirt kaming lahat. Thanks Andrew for the invitation last week :)

    As posted in http://forums.seo.ph/showpost.php?p=32237&postcount=15

Nice to have met you again Alfredo, back from those “seo cloaker” days while I was doing SEO for “that company” - black hat i think was not a term used back then. oooopppss.

For a developer (as if) :P , i think it was disappointing because there wasnt much discussed or if you where expecting more than your usual “awareness campaign”. Like that guy from domain.ph who was expecting more answers. Personally the GADGET is just the WIDGET google (G + DGET ) reinvented hehe, or the API grown to the next level.

From an SEO’s perspective, the only thing that bothered me was like RSS feeding, whats the impact of a GADGET “fed” content to Google’s criteria on duplicate content policy? They clearly emphasize that content can only be approved if it came from a site that gave you permission to use it. Here is a scenario (stupid as it may sound), i “scrape your content” place in my page and feed it my GADGET. Technically the content is alreay mine and i will ofcourse approve permission.

And how would the links generated by these content be treated by the Google Algorithm?

From an affiliate marketeers perspective, Im seeing GADGETS replacing or augmenting banner ads as a point of action to even a point of commissionable action. If the PORN or ADULT industry starts doing that in 2-3 months then thats where i suppose its going. You would see live on cam videos fed to partner site which you can customize relative to location or preferences set either by partner or the user himself (” select BIG BLONDE _ _ _ _”), with the GADGET based FREE TOUR now.B)

Google OpenSocial opens alot of possibilities specially for social media sites or is it an elaborate scheme to “profile” people based on their search behavior and network? This can also be the TROJAN horse for a segment of the online landscape that GOOGLE or any other Company has NO control of.

Need some sleep. Whoever invented deadlines should be dragged out on the street and skinned alive.

It was actually very disappointing to see that what they presented was stuff regular people already knew about these services. I mean if you follow the various Google blogs, you’d already know about this. Sayang lang yung lipad nila from California.
