First Day High Movie Review

Posted on October 8th, 2006 |

First Day High

Last September 30th (when the power was out for three days because of the typhoon) I went to see First Day High, a movie from ABS-CBN Star Cinema and sponsored by Rexona. The movie was so unoriginal but can still make you laugh.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
(Source)
The journey in solving the greatest mysteries of life begins on the first day of school.

Brainy Indi (Kim), MVP MJ2 (Gerald), Sosy Pré (Maja), Rebel Gael (Geoff) and Nice Guy Nathan (Jason) are college freshmen who enter FDH University without knowing what college life will bring them.

Anxious, excited and scared all at the same time, the five of them make seemingly ordinary, harmless decisions on their first day in school. Unbeknownst to them, these little decisions will eventually set the way they are going to be from that day on and will lead them to where they are right now – in the middle of an investigation on what is known as B.W.A.C.A. or Basketball Water Contamination Accident.

Considered to be the greatest mystery the university has ever encountered, the entire basketball team suddenly started acting funny and collapsing in the middle of the opening game. Not knowing what is happening, the students and other spectators erupt into a riot which brings the game into a halt. With the threat of forfeiting their chances in this year’s season looming, the school chairman and the coach hire the best investigator to solve the case. Initial investigation shows that the water drank by the players during the game was contaminated by a mysterious substance. But the more surprising finding was that the culprit is from the same school!

Who is responsible for all this?!

Is it Brainy Indi who by denying her growing love for MJ2 ends up heartbroken and formulated the anti-love potion thinking that it can “cure” her heartache?

Is it MVP MJ2 who never wanted the pressure that came along from being the next big superstar and from being the current MVP’s brother?

Is it Nice Guy Nathan who was the team’s water boy during that game?

Is it Sosy Pré who would do anything to become part of the most popular sorority even if it means running half-naked and being humiliated in front of the whole student body?

Or is it Rebel Gael who is willing to do anything to avoid seeking his father’s help to the point of dealing with a syndicate just to get the amount he needs to mount his art exhibit?

In the end, it is not only the mystery during the basketball game which was solved but more importantly, the five freshmen begin to solve the greater mysteries in their young lives – family, love and friendship.

MY MOVIE REVIEW
If you have seen Disney’s High School Musical, you will understand why I said the First Day High Movie was unoriginal. In High School Musical, it was a story of a bright student who has a romantic relationship with the school varsity player and both the girl and the guy’s peeps did not approve of it as it affected their concentration towards the team’s objectives. In First Day High, the story is still the same, a bright young girl and a school varsity player having a relationship that was not approved by the guy’s basketball team. I know many would agree with this as posted on several forums on the web.

The movie is also recommended for Young Teens Only. I see many 12-16 year olds watching the movie, even though the setting of the movie was on the first year in college. I could say the movie can give young girls the thrill and excitement (kilig) to see Gerald Anderson’s good looks, the romantic moments with Kim Chiu and the rest of the groups youthful exuberance.

Some parts of the movie was funny I admit. But most of it are really very common and boring at times. Maybe the movie wasn’t for me and I am already too old to watch this kind of teen flick.

The movie would have made more sale if it was shown earlier around June, when the first day of school really starts.

I recommend you don’t watch this if you don’t like teen movies in general.

yea its a stupid movie the first scene in the movie were they dance all together is really stupid…its like were all in this together in HSM…and dress codes are super stupid…even the color of the “varsity guy” is like the one in HSM they cant sing nor dance…i think the title is not right for the movie….

  4. Polly Says:

This movie was based the music video of an actual song called “First Day High” by a band called Kamikazee. I just don’t know if the music video itself was based on HSM. Though I have to admit that the movie may not be up to par with other Filipino movies out there, in its defense, I think that the dispute between this movie and HSM is coincidental and was not really meant to be taken the way that it is.

since when did pinoys ever made their own movies, or shows or soaps. they always copy. as for some people who said this movie is good, I guess it is, if you like cheesy movies, actors who can’t act, sing, especially sing. acting in teen/love movies are just so lame.

  8. MJ Says:

I didn’t watch this movie yet but i have 2 agree w/ Landon, the title isn’t fit for the concept of the movie..it seems like they never focused on how the first day of high school’s supposed 2 be.
So..if it was possible, they could REPEAT the making of this movie and regard the present as first–I was expecting something orig especially from ABS-CBN which is a channel known for originality.

  9. Mike Says:
