Relive the glory of the 300 Spatans!
MY MOVIE REVIEW
This is based Frank Miller’s (writer of Sin City, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Daredevil: The Man without Fear) graphic novel of the same title, retelling the Battle of Thermopylae.
The movie has more blood and gore than most of the similar movies in the past. But the choice of colors and the overall cinematography in earned an MTRCB rating of R-13 instead of For Adults Only based on too much violence. The artistic presentation of the fight sequence and the use of CGI made the movie very fun to watch.
Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) was depicted as an 7-foot (some say he’s 9-feet tall) tall, shaven, pierced and chain-covered creature with a deep strong voice to match Miller’s graphic novel, not following the historical depictions of Xerxes with a wavy beard and tall hat.
Many were expecting that the fight will end in victory for the 300 Spartans but unfortunately the story has to follow what really happened in history were all of them died defending their country, just enough time for Greece to gather the rest of the Greek army and fight the Persians. In fact Xerxes ordered King Leonidas’ head be cut off and his body hanged on a cross, but this was no longer shown.
There is also a similar movie “The 300 Spartans” which was released in the UK on 1962.
Rating: 4.5 of 5. Great if you love action movies. Not so great for people who are terrified with too much violence.
I have a question though, wouldn’t it 299 instead of 300 since Dilios (David Wenham), the man who lost his left eye returned to Sparta as instructed by King Leonidas?
