Why Friendster Failed to Become a Billion Dollar Company

Before I give more details why Friendster failed in becoming a top social networking site in the world, let me give some basic info about the company, courtesy from Wikipedia.

Why Friendster Failed to Become a Billion Dollar CompanyFriendster is an Internet social network service. The Friendster site was founded in Mountain View, California by Jonathan Abrams in March 2002 and is privately owned.

Google offered $30,000,000 to buy out Friendster in 2003, but they were turned down.

Friendster was considered the top online social network service until around April 2004 when it was overtaken by MySpace in terms of page views, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Friendster has also received competition from all-in-one sites such as Windows Live Spaces, Yahoo! 360, and Facebook.

Friendster’s decision to remain private instead of selling to Google in 2003 is considered one of the biggest blunders of Silicon Valley, the Associated Press claims Continue reading »

The Killing Peso Dollar Exchange Rate

Posted on May 27th, 2007 | Subscribe in a Reader | Subscribe by Email

Alright, I admit that the Philippine Peso is doing really strong against the US Dollar and it really hurts Filipinos working abroad and the local people who are also earning dollars because the value of each dollar is getting really low every day. I remember last May 2006 when the exchange rate was about 52.654 Pesos to a Dollar and it has been decreasing until now where the rate is PhP46.114 (as of May 25, 2007. That’s about PhP6.54 decrease for the past 12 months.

I have been saving my Dollar earnings ever since I got my first pay from design and link building projects and since I got . I also recently opened a Dollar account so I can deposit the money and hope it will earn interest and improve its value when the Peso-Dollar exchange rate increases. But because of the recent weakening of the Dollar I have to get more projects than I usually accept so I can have enough to spend and save for the future. I’m also feeling that creating the Dollar account wasn’t such a good idea as its worth is decreasing everyday Continue reading »

Knowing your Site Traffic

Posted on May 19th, 2007 | Subscribe in a Reader | Subscribe by Email

Knowing the site’s traffic is very important for site owners to know which pages of the site are most popular, location of the people are visiting the site, from which sites are they clicking from and what people are looking for on a site.

In Wikipedia, Internet Traffic is defined as the flow of data around the Internet. It includes web traffic, which is the amount of that data that is related to the WWW, along with the traffic from other major uses of the Internet, such as email. To know how much traffic your site is getting, you need to place a Hit Counter on your site

Your Ten Percent

What is a tithe?
The word tithe means ‘tenth’ and comes from the Anglian Old English teogotha. Like ten, it derives from the Indo-European root *dekm ‘ten’. Teogotha became tigethe in Early Middle English and tithe or tythe in Middle and Modern English.

The custom of giving a portion of one’s income for religious purposes predates Mosaic law. The Hebrew noun that is translated tithe in the Bible is maaser. The verb is asar. Both are related to the adjective for ‘ten’, so the figure of ten percent is of ancient origin. Tithing is first mentioned in Genesis 14:20 where Abraham gives a tithe to the priest Melchizedek. By the time Mosaic law was set down in Leviticus, tithing was specifically ordered: “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s.” There were penalties for failing to tithe. Tithing is frequently mentioned throughout the Old and New Testaments Continue reading »

MySpace Layouts Anyone?

Posted on May 12th, 2007 | Subscribe in a Reader | Subscribe by Email

For the longest time I haven’t updated my MySpace Account because I simply cannot spend too much time working on the layouts and changing the CSS properties to make it look the way I wanted to. Many of my friends already have customized MySpace profiles and their profile designs really reflect their personality and favorite hobbies, makes me think I should get my own MySpace profile ugraded.

It’s a good thing there are already several free MySpace layouts out there that does the work for me and all I need to do is choose the one I liked the most.

Learning Regular Expressions

Posted on May 12th, 2007 | Subscribe in a Reader | Subscribe by Email

In school, sometimes teachers teach you something you don’t really want to know but you have no choice but to listen and understand the lessons. When I was in college some of the lessons in computer programming like Perl or Pascal doesn’t make sense to me as I really don’t want to learn some of these languages and I prefer other useful languages such as PHP and ASP. But after finishing all these subjects, all programming languages have many similarities, one of which is the use of Regular Expressions.

What are Regular Expressions? Simply put, a Regular Expression is a set of symbols used to search for occurrences of text or to search and replace text. The simplest regular expressions are DOS/Windows wildcards; for example, *.doc refers to all file names with DOC extensions. However, regular expression functions are available in many programming languages that allow for complex pattern matching and text manipulation.
